Anxiety is the most common mental health concern in the United States, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Reframed Mental Health offers anxiety therapy in person at our Midtown Manhattan office and online anywhere in New York State. We're in network with most major insurance plans, including Medicaid, and your first step is a free consultation.
Most people don't call us about anxiety
When people call or email Reframed Mental Health, almost no one says they want therapy for anxiety. They call about what's causing it: a job that's taking more than it gives, a relationship that's hard to be in, a loss they haven't been able to talk about, or a life with more on the calendar than any one person has capacity for.
That's usually the right place to start. Anxiety is often a signal that something in your life needs attention, so a lot of our work is figuring out what it's responding to and what you can change about it. If you're not sure whether what you're feeling counts as anxiety, you don't need to figure that out before you reach out.
What does anxiety feel like?
Anxiety shows up differently for everyone. Some of the ways people describe it:
- Your mind won't switch off at night, or you wake up already running through the day
- Dread on Sunday evenings, or before a specific meeting, call or conversation
- A tight chest, stomach trouble or tension that seems to pop up when stressful things are happening
- Overplanning, overpreparing or rereading an email five times before you send it
- Avoiding things you used to do, or putting off things you know matter
- Feeling irritable or on edge, then feeling guilty about how you reacted
How do you treat anxiety?
Our therapists use different approaches, and all will adjust depending on what your goals are. Keilyn, for example, often combines cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy and mindfulness. When anxiety is tied to a past experience that still feels stuck, Edwin often uses grounding techniques or EMDR, which works differently from talk therapy.
What our therapists share is a practical approach. True to our name, a lot of the work is reframing: helping you see a situation differently so you can respond to it differently. Some sessions are about understanding why you feel the way you do. Others are about making a plan for the week and sharing ideas that might help with anxiety in your situation. Sometimes it's as simple as having a sounding board for a session, or sharing a good laugh or two that lets you step back and see the situation from a different frame of mind. That's reframing too.
If you're wondering which approach is right for you, here's how to choose a type of therapy.
Who will I work with?
Every therapist on our team works with anxiety. When we match you, we look at what's behind it, and also at who has openings that fit your schedule, whether you'd like to meet in person or online, and anything you've told us you're looking for in a therapist. Most of what brings people to us is something more than one of our therapists works with, so there's usually more than one option.
If you'd like to get to know the team first, you can meet our therapists. Keilyn also offers therapy in Spanish. And if your first match isn't the right fit, just let us know and we'll help you find someone who is a better fit.
Does insurance cover anxiety therapy?
Usually, yes. Reframed Mental Health is in network with 1199 SEIU, Aetna, Cigna, Curative, First Health, Medicaid, Meritain Health, NYC Employee PPO, Optum, Oscar, Oxford, UMR and UnitedHealthcare. Most people pay about what they pay to see their primary care doctor, and we check your coverage before your first session.
If you'd rather not use insurance, private pay is $125 for a 55-minute individual session. Here's how insurance, Medicaid and private pay work with us.
In person or online?
Both. Our office is at 1350 Avenue of the Americas, a little north of Rockefeller Center at 55th & 6th, and we see clients online anywhere in New York State. Every therapist on our team works a hybrid schedule, so we can find a time and format that fits your week.
How do I get started?
Book a free consultation with our intake team. We'll cover scheduling, insurance and whether you'd like to meet in person or online, then match you with a therapist. Depending on the therapist, we can often book your first session the same week.
