Insurance and Fees for Therapy in NYC

Reframed Mental Health is in network with 1199 SEIU, Aetna, Cigna, Curative, First Health, Medicaid, Meritain Health, NYC Employee PPO, Optum, Oscar, Oxford, UMR and UnitedHealthcare. Most people pay about what they pay for a sick visit to their doctor. If you'd rather not use insurance, private pay is $125 for an individual session and $175 for a couples session.

Every session is 55 minutes, in person at our Midtown Manhattan office or online anywhere in New York State, and your first step is a free consultation.

What if my plan isn't listed?

Check the front and back of your insurance card. A lot of plans don't run their own network of providers and use a bigger company's network instead, so the card will say something like "uses the Aetna network" or show a network logo, such as First Health or UnitedHealthcare. If your card names a network we're in, we can typically accept your plan, even when the company name on the front isn't on our list.

Do you take Medicaid?

Yes. We accept New York State Medicaid, and Medicaid managed care plans from the companies we're in network with. Even though we are a Medicaid provider, what tells you if we can accept your managed care plan is the company that runs your plan, which is the name on your card. If your Medicaid plan is through Fidelis or Anthem, for example, we can't see you through that plan, because we aren't in network with either company, even though it's a Medicaid plan. Here's how Medicaid managed care works.

How much will therapy cost with my insurance?

Most people pay whatever they pay for a standard office visit. If you go to your regular doctor because you have the flu (a sick visit, not your yearly checkup), whatever you pay there is likely what you'll pay for a session with us.

What you pay depends on how your plan is set up:

  • Copay: a flat amount you pay for each session.
  • Deductible: the amount you pay each year before your insurance starts paying its share. On a high-deductible plan, you pay the full rate your plan allows for each session until you meet it.
  • Coinsurance: once you've met your deductible, a percentage of the session rate that you pay, while insurance pays the rest.

To check your exact cost, we need your insurance card. Our intake team runs it as part of your intake paperwork, after your free consultation and before your first session.

Does insurance cover couples therapy?

Sometimes. We do bill insurance for couples sessions when a plan covers them, but every insurance company has its own requirements for whether or not they cover it, and a lot of plans that do cover it also limit how many sessions they'll cover. Because it is often significantly limited, we usually encourage private pay for couples therapy.

What are your private pay rates?

All sessions are 55 minutes.

  • $125 for an individual session
  • $175 for a couples session

We don't offer a sliding scale. Instead of having a big dollar amount advertised that always gets negotiated down, we'd rather keep our rates affordable and take insurance, including Medicaid, to help increase access to care.

People choose private pay for a few reasons. Some have a plan we aren't in network with. Some have a high deductible, and private pay works out to less than what they'd pay through insurance until the deductible is met. And some would rather keep therapy off their insurance record.

Will I get a Good Faith Estimate?

Yes. Under the federal No Surprises Act, if you aren't using insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost. Before your first session, you'll sign a consent form in our client portal that lists your session rate and our cancellation policy. If you have questions about it, or need it in another format, send us a secure message in the portal. You can read more about your rights under the No Surprises Act.

Can I use out-of-network benefits?

Yes. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, let us know and we'll set up the client portal to create and share a superbill (the receipt you send your insurance company to ask for reimbursement) automatically. How much your insurance pays back depends on your plan, so check your out-of-network benefits with them.

How do I pay?

Most clients keep a card on file in the client portal, and it's charged overnight after each session. HSA and FSA cards work too.

If you'd like to pay another way, such as Venmo or a check, we need to receive it before your session so we can confirm the payment. Your therapist doesn't handle payments (the operations team does), so send it to us ahead of time and we'll take care of the rest.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Things come up, and we don't want to be in the business of judging whether someone's emergency counts, so everyone gets the same allowance: 2 consecutive or 3 total late cancellations or no-shows in a calendar year.

If you usually see your therapist in person and something comes up that keeps you from coming in, let us know and we're happy to switch that session to online. It won't count toward your late cancellations.

Once you've used your allowance:

  • Commercial insurance or private pay: you can keep seeing your therapist by putting down a $100 deposit, which we use for any future no-shows.
  • Medicaid: under NY State Medicaid guidance, providers can't charge Medicaid members for missed appointments, so a deposit isn't an option. Instead, we'll refer you to another provider.

How do I get started?
